Clinical Laboratory Technology
On July 7, 2008, Governor David A. Paterson signed into law changes to the Clinical Laboratory Technology Practice Act that will add a new profession of certified histological technician, will provide changes and additions to the special provisions (grandparenting), and will establish new licensure types (limited licenses and restricted licenses) within the clinical laboratory technology professions. Licensure for all these professions remains within the State Education Department under the oversight of the Board of Regents.

Emergency regulations to implement these changes were approved on September 16, 2008 by the Board of Regents and will become effective on September 23, 2008. Those applicants who received a letter authorizing them to work until September 1, 2008 or until their applications are reviewed should have received a new letter extending that date to July 1, 2009. In addition, all applications have been reviewed based on the amendments. Those applicants who may have additional pathways for licensure under these new regulations will receive a letter to inform them of any forms that may be needed to facilitate licensure. Applications for licensure are being revised to include all licensure pathways and should be available on the professions' website by mid-October.

A new set of Questions and Answers about the changes to the Clinical Laboratory Technology professions has been posted.

The emergency regulations, which will be submitted to the Board of Regents for approval on a permanent basis in December 2008, are available: here.
